The Pruitt-Igoe Myth:

an urban history

Destroyed in a dramatic and highly-publicized implosion, the Pruitt-Igoe public housing development in Saint Louis has become a widespread symbol of failure among architects, politicians and policy makers.

The Pruitt-Igoe Myth explores the social, economic and legislative issues that led to the decline of conventional public housing in America, and the city centers in which the projects were built.

"Superb... an uncommonly artful example of film journalism."

Variety - Robert Koehler
Ideal for generating student interest and discussion, The Pruitt-Igoe Myth is a cross-disciplinary film situated at the intersection of urban history, architecture/urban design, sociology and public policy. An engaging exploration of life within the projects, the public housing and urban renewal programs and the decline of America’s inner cities, the film features:
  • Informative narration that places Pruitt-Igoe firmly within its historical, social and cultural context;
  • Poignant interviews with former residents, offering a critically-ignored perspective, at the emotional heart of the film;
  • Academic interviews, including Dr. Robert Fishman (Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning, University of Michigan); Dr. Joyce Ladner (Howard University; Brookings Institution); and Dr. Joseph Heathcott (Associate Professor of Urban Studies, The New School);
  • Archival footage of Pruitt-Igoe, mid-Century St. Louis and its residents: a lively portrait of a project and city in transition;
  • Precise characterization, an evocative film score, and a narrative structure that engage contemporary audiences with a compelling historical subject.
The Pruitt-Igoe Myth began its film festival run in February in the college towns of Oxford, Mississippi and Missoula, Montana, followed by Columbia, Missouri and Durham, North Carolina. It will be playing additional film festivals throughout the Summer and Fall of 2011.

"An intelligent meditation on the decline of American cities."

Art Forum - Dennis Lim
We would be honored if your organization considered a screening of The Pruitt-Igoe Myth, which could be turned into a community event complete with a presentation, lecture or post-screening discussion led by one of your organization’s representatives.

To increase public awareness for your screening, we will promote your screening on our website, Facebook page and via our Twitter account. The director and producers are available for interviews with local/college press.

"A captivating and visually compelling reassessment of the precipitous decline and staggering collapse of the modernist public housing project. The movie’s object is to dispel, rather than perpetuate, historical fantasy.”
